D&D 5e Point Buy Calculator
Distribute 27 points among your six ability scores using the official D&D 5e Point Buy system. Scores range from 8 to 15 before racial bonuses.
Points Spent: 0 / 27 | Points Remaining: 27
Formula
Point Cost per Score (PHB p.13):
| Score | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13 | 14 | 15 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 7 | 9 |
Ability Modifier: modifier = ⌊(score − 10) / 2⌋
Total Points Budget: 27 points to distribute across all six ability scores.
Note: Scores 14 and 15 cost extra (7 and 9 respectively) to discourage "dump stat" strategies.
Assumptions & References
- Based on the Player's Handbook (PHB), Chapter 1, p.13 — "Variant: Customizing Ability Scores."
- Each ability score starts at a minimum of 8 and has a maximum of 15 before racial ability score increases.
- You have exactly 27 points to spend. Unspent points are lost — they cannot be saved.
- Racial bonuses (e.g., +2 STR for Hill Dwarf) are applied after point buy and can push scores above 15, up to a maximum of 20 at character creation.
- This calculator does not include racial bonuses, feats, or Ability Score Improvements (ASIs) gained at higher levels.
- The point cost is non-linear: scores 14 and 15 cost disproportionately more to encourage balanced builds.
- This system is an optional rule; the default method is rolling 4d6 and dropping the lowest die.
